Pier Paolo Vergerio (1370–1444) of Capodistria was a canon lawyer, secretary to Popes Innocent VII and Gregory XII, a participant in the Council of Constance, and afterward secretary to the Emperor Sigismund. He studied at Padua, Florence and Bologna, and taught logic at Padua for sixteen years. About the year 1402 he wrote De ingenuis moribus et liberalibus studiis for Ubertino, son of the prince of Padua. This morning I was reading an opinion article in the Harvard Crimson proposing a policy for the use of artificial intelligence in school districts. The writer warned that the technology is developing very quickly, and that if we do not get out in front of it and limit it, it is going to get out of control—and all the intellectual benefits of modern schooling will be lost on children who grow up using these tools. The role of artificial intelligence in education is a controversial subject today. Unfortunately, much of what is said in Christian circles is ignorant and irresponsible. Many have already decided that A.I. bad before they’ve even learned what it is or how it works.
