“The teacher leads the pupil to knowledge of things he does not know in the same way that one directs himself through the process of discovering something he does not know.” (St. Thomas Aquinas, De Magistro)
The Classical Liberal Arts Academy offers private tutoring, free of charge, to students enrolled in its programs, wherever they live. Tutoring is available by Zoom anywhere in the world, and in person at the Academy’s new office in Monroe, North Carolina.
This is not general homework help. It is serious study of the subjects that formed Christian civilization: the languages, the arts of reasoning, philosophy, and the doctrine of the Church. Students learn from the same texts Catholic schools used for centuries.
What We Teach
- Latin: from first declensions to reading the Bible, the Psalter, Cicero, Virgil, and the Fathers and Doctors of the Church.
- Greek: classical and New Testament Greek, from the alphabet to reading the Gospels, Aristotle and Homer.
- Logic: the traditional logic of Porphyry and Aristotle’s Organon. Students learn to define, divide, judge, and reason soundly.
- Classical Philosophy: Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas, read in the tradition of the Schoolmen.
- Catholic Theology: the Faith studied systematically from a Scholastic (Thomistic) perspective.
- Classical Humanities: guided reading of the great Greek, Roman, and English authors.
Tutoring follows the Academy’s own curriculum, so each session works directly with the courses the student is already studying. Each lesson builds toward real mastery, not just a better grade on next week’s quiz.
Who It Is For
Tutoring is free for students enrolled in Academy programs (not Extern), in any country. It serves students who:
- Need help with a difficult lesson or course and want a teacher to work through it with them.
- Want to go further or faster than their course work alone allows.
- Are preparing for a new course or level and want a strong start.
- Are adult students reading Latin, studying St. Thomas, or deepening their understanding of the Faith.
Families not yet enrolled are welcome to schedule a free consultation to learn about the Academy’s programs.
How Tutoring Works
Tutoring is available at our Monroe office, remotely by Zoom, or at another location by arrangement. Students may meet one-on-one or in small groups, and group meetings are welcome. Parents are encouraged to organize small groups to give students the benefit of discussion with their peers.
Lessons follow the classical method: reading the text, explaining it, and questioning the student until he understands it and can explain it himself. Students receive regular assignments between sessions, and progress is assessed against clear standards.
Because tutoring follows the Academy’s courses, it directly supports the student’s work toward credit on his Academy transcript.
About the Tutor

Tutoring is provided by Mr. William C. Michael, O.P., founder and Headmaster of the Classical Liberal Arts Academy. He studied Classics at Rutgers University and founded the Academy in 2008. Under his direction, it earned full accreditation on its first attempt.
Mr. Michael is a Lay Dominican, committed to the philosophy of Aristotle and the theology of St. Thomas Aquinas. He and his wife have homeschooled their ten children for more than twenty-six years. He has spent his career teaching the classical liberal arts as the Church has always taught them.
How to Begin
Every student begins with a free consultation by Zoom, phone, or in person. We will discuss the student’s goals and previous studies, assess where he stands, and recommend a plan of study. The number of openings each week is limited.
