How to Prepare Assignments for Submission

In the Classical Liberal Arts Academy, some assignments are much easier to complete by hand than by typing (e.g., Algebra, Greek). Students will need to learn and practice preparing assignments conveniently is very important. 1. Complete work by hand. Using regular notebook paper, students can complete assignments that are too inconvenient to type well. Be sure to add a proper heading at the top of your paper, which includes you name and date on every page. 2.  Save Work as PDF After completing your assignment, it will need to be converted to a PDF document for submission and grading.  This … Continue

Seton Homeschool vs. the Classical Liberal Arts Academy (2021)

Classical Liberal Arts Academy - Free Classical Studies for Catholic Students,

The most popular homeschool program among modern Catholic families is, by far, Seton Homeschool or Seton Home Study School.  Seton was the first Catholic homeschool program, started in the 1980s, and it serves thousands of Catholic families.  That does not, of course mean that this is the best Catholic homeschool program, only that it is the most popular.   Part I. Thinking about Seton Home Study I.  Seton Homeschool Curriculum Let’s be honest. Seton homeschool isn’t a program for anyone looking for a Catholic education like that enjoyed by the saints.  Very little attention is given to classical Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric, … Continue

Think Rightly about College Admission

In the 21st century, we must think rightly about college admission.  As Christian parents, you are responsible to God to raise your children as disciples of Jesus Christ.  That is your only responsibility as a parent.  You are to give them the education that God wills for them and it’s obvious, to any reasonable person, that this education is that which was established and commended to us by the saints and doctors of the Church.  Living 2000 years into Christian Church history, only a fool would believe it’s a good idea to “design your own curriculum”, and I suppose you … Continue

The Triumph of St. Thomas Aquinas

The painting above is titled “The Triumph of St. Thomas Aquinas” and was produced by the 14th century artist Andrea da Firenze.  This is quite an elaborate scene and it represents for us the truth of Catholic Philosophy conquering all heresy and enlightening all sciences.  I’d like to walk you through this painting, explaining the significance of the images. First of all, find at the center of the scene the Angelic Doctor, St. Thomas Aquinas.  In his hand, he holds a book which contains the Latin text of Wisdom 7:7, “Optavi, et datus est mihi sensus; et invocavi, et venit … Continue

Weathering the Storm

When you decide to home school your children, you are likely doing so for a number of virtuous reasons. First, when your children are born, your heart is overwhelmed with gratitude to God for healthy pregnancy and delivery, and the health of your children.  You can’t wait to have the child baptized and these experiences are emotionally overwhelming.  Births and baptisms, for me, are the most amazing events in my life.  At that time in your children’s lives, you are thinking soberly, with the children’s highest good and life’s priorities in mind. Second, when the time comes for your children … Continue

Choosing What to Study

It’s very common for students or parents to look over the CLAA curriculum and courses and ask: What should I study? What courses should I focus on? What courses are the most important? How much time should I give to this or that course? This dilemma comes from the realization that every course the CLAA offers is important and there is really nothing that can be ignored.  The CLAA is not like a modern school where students just pick what they want to satisfy graduation requirements.  There are real benefits to be gained from every course studied and real gaps … Continue

Persevering to the End

Dear students, At this time of year, the weather begins to change, the time changes, and we begin to think about the holidays.  While all of this is good, we are also tempted to stop working, which is bad. These are the times that separate the great students from ordinary kids.  Ordinary kids are always looking for an excuse take a break.  They do not live like people who believe they receive their life and health by God, to use for His glory, but as if these things are their right, to use as they please.  They have selfish desires … Continue

The Danger of Self-Contradiction

For Republicans, there are many positives heading into the mid-terms, but the biggest obstacle to Republican progress is the self-contradiction that arises during the party’s emotional moments, when it forgets that the cameras are rolling and shows signs that its motives aren’t pure. The illustrator Phil Hands captures this problem well in his recent cartoon (right). Americans are currently bored by their material prosperity because they have no transcendent mission to pursue.  This is, of course, owed to their abandonment of the Gospel, which sets the limits on our disagreements and reminds us that we will never be happy in … Continue

Maxims for the Direction of a Soul

by St. Alphonsus Liguori To desire ardently to increase in the love of Jesus Christ. Often to make acts of love towards Jesus Christ. Immediately on waking, and before going to sleep, to make an act of love, seeking always to unite your own will to the will of Jesus Christ. Often to meditate on his Passion. Always to ask Jesus Christ for his love. To communicate often, and many times in the day to make spiritual Communions. Often to visit the Most Holy Sacrament. Every morning to receive from the hands of Jesus Christ himself your own cross. To … Continue

Is Religious Life The Answer?

“A good conscience and a holy life is better than all.” St. Thomas a Kempis This quote is one that you should memorize and say to yourself again and again, every day.  There is nothing in this world that is better for you than a good conscience and a holy life.  A college degree is not  better.  A nice car is not better.  A beautiful wife or handsome husband is not better.  A nice house is not better.  A successful business is not better.  A vacation in the most beautiful place on earth is not better.  Nothing you can ever … Continue
