Description
English Composition I is the first of the CLAA’s composition courses. It teaches the art of written composition, following Stratton Brooks’ English Composition, Book One.
The course begins where writing itself begins: with thinking. A student who has not thought clearly cannot write clearly, and no rule of composition will supply what thought has not furnished. From the first lesson the student is trained to find something to say, to see it plainly, and then to set it down.
He learns to express ideas in narration and description. He learns how a paragraph is developed, and how paragraphs are joined into a whole composition. He studies the construction of the sentence, correctness in usage, and the choice of words. He is taught the figures of speech, the writing of letters, exposition, and argument. English grammar is treated as it bears upon writing.

One principle is taken up at a time and mastered before the next is introduced. The student writes in every lesson, and what he has learned is not set aside but used again in everything he writes afterward.
The end of the course is a student who can express his thought freely, clearly, and forcibly — and who writes accurately because he knows why the rule is what it is.
This course assumes the student has command of English grammar. The three courses of the CLAA English Grammar program are the preparation for it.
