English Language Arts
The Classical Liberal Arts Academy offers a rigorous and ordered study of English Language Arts—reading, writing, grammar, and composition—rooted in the classical understanding of language as the instrument of thought. In these courses, students are led beyond modern skills-based and expressive approaches to recover disciplined reading, precise writing, and careful use of language ordered to truth. ELA-051 English Grammar I
$100.00 for 1 yearThe first of three English Grammar courses in the CLAA. In 68 lessons, a student in grades 2–4 learns the letters and syllables of English, the eight parts of speech, and how sentences are formed and written. The lessons are based on Harvey’s Elementary Grammar and written so a child can read and understand them himself.

In 115 lessons, a student in grades 4–6 covers the whole of English grammar again at greater depth: orthography, the parts of speech, the analysis of sentences, the rules of syntax, punctuation, and prosody. The lessons are based on Harvey’s Practical Grammar.

In 90 lessons, a student in grades 6–8 studies English grammar in its classical form: the accidence of the parts of speech, the formation of words from Latin and Greek, the combinations that make a sentence, and the improvement of style. $125.00The first course in written composition at the CLAA. Following Stratton Brooks’ English Composition, Book One, the student learns to narrate, describe, build paragraphs, and write whole compositions — one principle at a time. For students beginning formal composition study.

$125.00The second and last composition course at the CLAA. Following Stratton Brooks’ English Composition, Book Two, the student takes up narration, description, exposition, and argument in their fuller form, and learns to read drama, the novel, the short story, the essay, and poetry with judgment.
