Novena for Impossible Requests

As I always teach in the Classical Liberal Arts Academy, Catholic parenting and homeschooling is work that exceeds human strength. Grace is not transmitted like genetics from parent to child and parents have to patiently endure many trials, in love. One popular devotion Catholics can make use of is the “Novena for Impossible for Requests“. This is no easy devotion, but is one worth pursuing for those who feel that their needs are extraordinary, if not impossible. This devotion is to be offered daily for nine months. Where Real Learning Begins

This talk was transcribed digitally and will be edited in the future. Today is Wednesday, July 7. And I’d like to talk about a topic that I believe is the key that really unlocks philosophical learning. A topic that I would say is the difference between all common people and a wise man. The topic I could say, this is the most important lesson in all of philosophical study, most important lesson in all philosophical education, and is really the, the gateway into the world of true Aristotelian or scholastic philosophy. You won’t hear many people talk about this, because … Continue

Classical Catholic Education and Career Preparation

This talk was automatically transcribed and will be edited in the future. Today is Tuesday, July 13 and yesterday, I published a silly little illustration, short video on YouTube where I explained or illustrated how classical Catholic education relates to modern college admission. And a parent who enjoyed that video, wrote to me and asked me if I would do a talk on how classical Catholic education relates to modern career preparation or vocational preparation. And I’m happy to do so. So in this talk, what I’d like to talk about is, how does classical Catholic education, studying the classical … Continue

Inspiration for Christian Writers

This talk was transcribed digitally and will be edited shortly. Today I’d like to talk about a topic that I think will be interesting to many students, maybe some adults. Because in modern circles, schools like to talk a lot about writing. And people go to college even major in English. And yet we never find any great writers being produced people can publish their own novels or whatever. But we don’t see any real, great works of poetry, or writing. And we should wonder why. If we go back, especially to Victorian England, we’ll find that many people wrote … Continue

Fighting Effects Rather Than Causes

This talk was digitally transcribed and will be edited as soon as possible. Today is Monday, July 5, and I was having a chat with a friend this morning. friend who sends me links to videos or resources that he thinks I’d be interested in. And often they are very interesting, but one was a link to a message from father Baron another was a link to a quote from Gk Chesterton. And I wrote back. And my response led to a little bit of discussion back and forth, and it raised an issue that I think, requires some treatment … Continue

Christianity vs. Natural Law Politics

Transcribed by https://otter.ai Today is Tuesday, June 29. And I haven’t posted any talks in a couple of days because I haven’t been feeling well, you could probably hear that still in my voice. Thanks be to God, I’m feeling better today. And there’s a topic that I’d like to discuss that I hope, if I can articulate this topic, clearly, it will help address 100 different issues that we have to deal with in modern Christian controversies. And one of the reasons why I want to talk about this today’s because I was asked to talk about a very … Continue

Classical Virtues vs. Christian Virtues

Note:  This talk has been transcribed digitally and will be edited over time. Today is Sunday, July 4. And while I’m out for walks on Sundays, I like to try and use the time for meditations that I’d consider more spiritual than those that I normally engage in. Normally, I may talk about political questions or topics in education, but on Sundays, I like to devote my mind to more spiritual questions and topics and try to make good use of the Lord’s day as a day of rest from temporal concerns and temporal work, and treat it as what … Continue

Linguistics and the International Phonetic Alphabet

In the Academy’s English Reading course, the flashcards parents use to teach children the sounds and symbols of the lessons contain symbols from the International Phonetic Alphabet.  While this phonetic alphabet is commonly used by modern dictionaries and language resources, it is not common knowledge among homeschool parents or school teachers, so I’d like to take a few minutes and introduce this system of marking pronunciation. The video below is intended to help parents teaching with our English Reading program, and may be of interest to students as well. God bless your studies, William C. Michael, Headmaster Classical Liberal Arts … Continue

Wisdom, Happiness and Simplicity of Life

Transcribed by https://otter.ai Today is Sunday, June 27, and I’d like to talk about a topic that I was reflecting on today at Mass that I realize is really the the thread that runs through everything that I, that I say and do. Certainly everything that I say in these talks. Certainly everything that I teach, as, as a classical liberal arts teacher, certainly everything that guides my decisions. And I can certainly say that times in my life where I was not thinking, rightly, on this one topic, were the times when I made decisions that I regret. And … Continue

The Dangers of Mommy Culture

Transcribed by https://otter.ai Introduction:  The Danger of Mommy Culture Today is Monday, June 25. And I’m going to use my walk time today to talk about a topic that I’ve been talking to my wife about for 22 years now. It’s a topic that’s always been central to our discussions as a married couple, to what I believe has been my duty, as head of household and as her husband. My wife, as a woman living in modern American society, is constantly under assault by false ideas about her own role in the world, about the family, about relationships within … Continue
