In Latin Reading III, students in the Classical Liberal Arts Academy study Latin poetry. In particular, we study Vergil’s Aeneid. This work was written in a meter called dactyllic hexameter, the same meter in which Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey were written in Greek. Reading classical poetry is difficult because we must be careful to read so that the natural accents of the words are maintained, while the length of the syllables that make up the rhythm of the poem are spoken correctly.
