Welcome to the Classical Liberal Arts Academy’s English Reading course. This course allows a parent to easily lead a child to read English correctly. To use these lessons, simply follow the instructions provided in each part.
I. Elementary Sounds
Memorize the names and sounds of the following symbols, while also learning to write them. When all can be named, sounded and written, proceed to the Memory Words.
- ă – English Short A, as A in APPLE.
- ạ – English Schwa A, as A in ABOVE.
- ā – English Long A, as A in AGE.
- ĕ – English Short E, as E in EGG.
- ẹ – English Schwa E, as E in WERE.
e– English Silent E, no sound.- ĭ – English Short I, as I in INK.
- ŏ – English Short O, as O in GOD.
- ọ – English Schwa O, as O in LOVE.
- b – Classical B, as B in BOY.
- th – English Digraph TH, as TH in THIN.
- th – English Voiced Digraph TH, as TH in THIS.
- g – Classical G, as G in GOD.
- n – Classical N as N in NUN.
- ng – English digraph NG, as NG in SONG.
- w – English W as W in WORK.
- s – Classical S, as S in SUN.
- s – English voiced S, as S in ROSE.
- r – English R, as R in RED.
- d – Classical D, as D in DOG.
- m – Classical M, as M in MAN.

II. Memory Words
Memorize the memory words below and practice writing them with the symbols. When all can be sounded and written, proceed to the Word Study below.

III. Word Study
Use your knowledge of the symbols and memory words above to read and write each word of the line below. When all can be sounded and written out properly, proceed to the reading below.
Ĭn thẹ bē|gĭn|nĭng wạs thẹ Wọrd, ănd thẹ Wọrd wạs wĭth Gŏd, ănd thẹ Wọrd wạs Gŏd. Thẹ sāme wạs ĭn thẹ bē|gĭn|nĭng wĭth Gŏd.
IV. Reading
Copy the reading below onto a sheet of paper or chalkboard. Have the student use the symbols above to mark the sound represented by each letter or group of letters. Continue this exercise until it can be completed easily, from memory. Submit a copy of the student’s work for review and record-keeping.
