A mother recently shared:
“Sometimes I feel very discouraged and overwhelmed. I truly want to be a good and loving wife and mother, but I feel like I’m always failing in some way. How can I maintain a peaceful, encouraged, and joyful disposition daily?”
First, dear mother, know this: the longing you have to be a good wife and mother is itself a sign of God’s grace in your soul. Discouragement often whispers that because we see our faults, we are failures. But the saints teach the opposite. St. Francis de Sales wrote, “Do not be disturbed because you cannot always experience the perfection of the virtues, but be content to do your best.”
Peace and joy grow when we stop measuring ourselves by yesterday’s failures and instead begin each day anew. Each morning, offer your day to God: your work, your fatigue, even your imperfections. Say, “Lord, I give You everything today—help me love You and my family with the strength You provide.”
Remember that motherhood is a hidden, daily martyrdom of love. The Lord knows your sacrifices. He does not expect perfection, only faithfulness. When you fall, rise quickly. Run to Confession, pray often, and keep close to the sacraments. As Christ promised, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor 12:9).
Finally, ask Our Lady for help. She, too, lived the ordinary rhythms of home and family life. A simple Hail Mary throughout the day can steady your heart and remind you that you are not alone.
Take courage. In God’s eyes, your striving love is precious. Peace and joy do not come from a perfect home but from trusting Him in the midst of it.
