Thank you for visiting the Classical Liberal Arts Academy website and, more importantly, for taking the time to learn a little about me. The Catholic Church teaches that parents have the right and duty to seek out schools and teachers for their children that share their convictions and are capable of providing true, Catholic education in all subject areas. If you are a Catholic parent interested in providing your child(ren) with a real, historic, classical Catholic education that serves the highest standards of academic excellence, I believe you will be pleased to learn what I can offer.

As for my education, I studied Classics and Ancient History at Rutgers University, where I graduated magna cum laude and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. While studying, I was given permission by the Classics department chairman to bypass the normal course of degree studies and pursue a historical “classical liberal arts” program that I was working to recover by my own research. This allowed me to get started in the work o of restoring the classical Catholic curriculum. By the time I received my degree, I was already working in classical education, teaching Latin, Greek, History and Literature at a preparatory school in northern New Jersey. It was my desire to devote my life to Christian education–and I did so.

After graduating, I began teaching Classics in excellent prep schools during the day, while continuing my research in classical Catholic studied in the evenings. I used my classroom as a laboratory to experiment with the textbooks and teaching methods of the past, gaining useful experience that further directed my research over a period of 10 years. I enjoyed great success as a prep school Classics teacher and was encouraged by my students and colleagues to seek greater things. One of my colleagues at the time wrote:

“Mr. Michael’s courses are legendary. The magnitude of this man’s influence at our school reaches the level of a Hollywood drama. Like the inspirational characters from Dead Poets Society, The Emperor’s Club, and Coach Carter, Bill Michael has revolutionized the lives of numerous young people. In all of my years of teaching, I have never witnessed a teacher make such an extensive impact on students.”

In August of 2008, I decided not to go back to classroom teaching, but to take a risk and attempt to pursue something extraordinary. I requested and received permission from my bishop and began tutoring Catholic students in the classical liberal arts, classical philosophy and Catholic theology. Parents of my local students began telling friends and relatives about my tutoring work and I began to receive requests for remote tutoring. I prepared a webite to allow students access to study materials and assessments and by March of 2009, I had over 1,000 students working online with me. This was the beginning of the Classical Liberal Arts Academy–a project I never imagined would be possible.

I have spent the last 12 years continuing my research in classical Catholic education and have restored the entire curriculum which numbers over 100 courses from elementary Reading and Arithmetic through Aristotelean Metaphysics and Scholastic Theology. Having achieved this, I am eager to turn my attention to full-time tutoring for the rest of my life.

As regards my personal life, I was born in 1975 and grew up in Edison, New Jersey. I married my high school sweetheart, Dania (Strevell), in 1998. In 2005, we relocated to rural North Carolina to raise our children and enjoy a peaceful and affordable place for my life’s work in classical studies. We have been blessed with ten healthy children, born between 2000 and 2014, whom we have raised in the Catholic Church. Our adult children have, thus far, chosen military careers and are currently engaged in college studies as members of the US Army Reserves. I expect that our younger children will be following in their footsteps.

Today, I am looking for gifted students with supportive parents who desire the best classical Catholic tutoring available. Tutoring is a significant financial commitment for parents, but the knowledge, experience and dedication I offer is extremely rare today, and the results are worth the costs. Parents can rest knowing that they’re fulfilling their duties to their children, and rejoice in the results that they might not have expected would be possible in this generation.

I’m ready when you are.

Feedback

The Holy Spirit says, “Let another praise thee, and not thy own mouth: a stranger, and not thy own lips.” (Proverbs 27:2).  Seeing that there may be some appropriate place for human feedback, I offer these comments that have been received without solicitation who have studied with us.

“As a Catholic Priest, I cannot but agree that vocations have died to a large extent because education is just not Catholic in ethos or method in our Catholic schools and is not helped by curriculum providers. Thank you for what you are doing for vocations and our children’s futures. May Almighty God bless you and your family and the CLAA.”

“From 2021-2023, I will study philosophy, mathematics, politics, economics, and classics at Oxford University.  When I discovered your program, I knew that I had to consider enrolment myself, for my own moral and spiritual edification.”

“The videos that you make are of an enormous help for me to understand the content taught. My wife took several philosophy courses at Princeton University and she said that no professor taught better.”

“What you have assembled rivals (or in fact exceeds) the standards of the finest universities of modern Europe.”

“Your program is fascinating, I had never seen a modern curriculum with the Trivium and Quadrivium.”

“When we began our homeschool journey, we knew we wanted to give our children a Classical and Catholic education. After trying a program that claimed to be Classical, we felt something was missing and not exactly what we were looking for. We searched for another classical program and found the CLAA. It was and is exactly what we wanted for our children. It is truly a classical and catholic program and our children have grown in so many ways through their studies. We have been using the program for 10 years and will continue using it for all of our children. We are so grateful for the continual guidance and help we have received from Mr. and Mrs. Michael.”

“Thank you and Dania and all your family for your hard work! You’ve changed our lives!!!  God bless you all!!

“This curriculum is second to none. It is truly and historically Christian, and particularly entirely Catholic. My children thoroughly enjoy and look forward to their studies every day, and are advancing at a surprising rate. The Michaels have been helpful and patient with all of our questions regarding the CLAA no matter how ridiculous they might be.”

“The boys get such a thrill out of messaging you and Mrs. Michael! We appreciate you guys so much!”

“This is true to the historical curriculum that all the saints studied. William and his wife have been most helpful and patient with us over the years. Be patient with your children when they begin but boy is this way of life worth it. No curriculum compares.”

“I’m so grateful to God now that I’m a Priest to have found you again with the free-men offer. It was so inspiring that I’ve now paid for many courses for my children and am recommending it to as many men and religious as I meet. I have some responsibility for vocations in my diocese and I completely agree that the vocations crisis is in the most part due to education and the lack thereof and evolution.”

“Your curriculum is obviously the most purely classical of all the many Catholic classical homeschool curricula out there, which makes it unique (truly the only thing of its kind on the market) Can’t wait to join the CLAA community in a few years!”

“Thank you for doing this. I really wish I had this kind of education growing up.  In Malaysia, we don’t have anything like this. Even Catholic schools are no longer Catholic.”

“Thank you for sharing our life of offering Christ to the poor and to one another. You are such a wonderful couple, amazing spirit and lovely blessed children. Give God thanks! We appreciate your whole-hearted and generous support for our community and the poor. May the Lord bless your family with peace and love. With love and prayers, M.O.P family.”  Missionaries of the Poor

In all of my years of teaching, I have never witnessed a teacher make such an extensive impact on students…He’s a man of outstanding moral integrity, he’s culturally relevant and in-tuned…and he seems to know something about everything. He may be the most brilliant man I have ever met.”  High School Theology Teacher

“My family is thoroughly enjoying CLAA. Watching my wife teach them and the CLAA forum has caused me to become a Catholic revert. THANK YOU!!!”

“Mr. Michael changes your life. He gives you spiritual guidance, forces you to use your mind and think, challenges you in every aspect of your life, and by the time he is finished with you, you’re able to think clearly and wisely. His ability to connect with you on any subject is phenomenal. Any subject, any time, any place, he is well prepared to teach and guide you. Most importantly he has made me a better person. I can’t say that about any teacher I’ve ever had in my life. He has dedicated his whole entire life to God’s work, and is the example of what Jesus wants us to be. I don’t think many people can say they know somebody like that. Mr. Michael has changed my life.”  Will Luoni, Attorney

“Mr. Michael’s teaching has provided me a firm base of learning in Logic and Rhetoric…I use his teachings everyday and the overall background that he provided me with has helped me defend Christianity.” Clint Irwin, Goalkeeper, Colorado Rapids (MLS)

“Mr. Michael is the kind of teacher that we should be very thankful to have…It is so refreshing to come across an educator who understands how different children learn and progress… His love for God’s children and his desire to reach all students is an incredible blessing to us all.”  Elementary School Teacher

“I cannot tell you enough or express in the right words how much we appreciate, and are now more at ease, this year. Understanding what you are offering and knowing I am now giving them just what they need, homeschooling does not feel so overwhelming. Thank you for taking the time to bring this treasure of the true classical curriculum back and thank you for helping us to implement and understand it. I think I am getting my sanity back.”
