Once you’ve scheduled your first tutoring sessions, it’s time to get ready to make the most of them.
1. High Speed Internet Access
The first need for online tutoring is a high speed internet connection. If you visit a local library or have cable internet service in a city or suburb, your internet speeds can be as high as 200 Mbps. These speeds are NOT necessary for online tutoring sessions. We use Google Meet for our online meetings, and users will be fine as long as their internet speed is 2 Mpbs or higher. You can test your internet connection speed here.
A student needs a quiet place for his online tutoring session. It is best to have the student’s back to a wall with a light source in front of his face. Setting up a place for a student’s tutoring sessions may take a few tries, but once you have a good spot established, future sessions will be trouble-free.
A student will need a computer for an online tutoring session, and a PC on a desk or table is recommended. Meetings can be conducted using a tablet or a smartphone if necessary, but this is not ideal. Computer devices are available very affordably today, and I recommend Chromebooks for students. These can be purchased new for under $200.
A student will need a computer with a webcam to participate in an online tutoring session. Most laptop computers, tablets and smartphones come with built-in webcams, so this is usually no problem. If you need to purchase a webcam for a computer, I use the Logitech C920, which is usually the most highly rated webcam.
Students cannot listen to their computer audio on speakers while in a tutoring session because their microphone (see below) will pick up the sound. Students will need headphones so that their microphones hear only their voices. This can be as simple as a set of plug-in earbuds–so long as the sound they hear is kept out of their microphones.
To be able to speak during tutoring sessions, students will need a microphone. The ideal setup is for students to wear an headset that provides both headphones and a microphone. A popular headset used for this purpose is the Logitech C390, which costs only $20.
7. NOTEBOOK and Pen
Students should have a notebook and pen on hand during their tutoring sessions, and I will direct their note-taking as we go.
The benefits that online tutoring offers can be enjoyed without any great expense. The requirements for online meetings are simple and affordable–especially when you consider the time and money saved from traveling to and from in-person meetings.
If you have any questions about your setup, please contact me before our first scheduled meeting. I will work patiently with students as they learn to participate in these meetings, so don’t stress about these things. After one or two meetings, all the kinks will be worked out and your children will have the opportunity to enjoy tutoring sessions any time they need them.
God bless your studies,
