What courses are recommended for a 1st grade student?

The Classical Liberal Arts Academy is not arranged to serve the modern K-12 school model and does not recommend that homeschooling families follow such a model. Homeschooling families have no excuse for studying only 180 days per year as modern schools do.  Much more needs to be done to provide children with a classical Catholic education.

We recommend that parents learn the difference between pursuing Wisdom through real classical Catholic studies and satisfying modern school requirements.  Parents should not choose one or the other, but learn how to satisfy both in a responsible way.

1. Classical Catholic Studies (Ages 7-11)

Young children getting started should begin their classical Catholic studies with the following courses:

  • Trivium
    • TRV-111 Latin Reading I
  • Quadrivium
    • n/a
  • Philosophy
    • PHL-101 Aesop’s Fables
  • Theology
    • THL-100 Catholic Bible I
    • THL-111 Baltimore Catechism I
  • Humanities
    • HUM-101 World Chronology

2. Grade 1 Studies (Ages 6-7)

In addition to the classical Catholic studies listed above, students are recommended to complete the following courses to satisfy modern grade level requirements:

  • English
    • MOD-002 English Reading I
    • MOD 021 Elementary Literature 1
    • MOD-091 Handwriting I (Manuscript)
    • MOD-100 English Spelling (Lessons 1-8)
  • Mathematics
    • MOD-011 Modern Arithmetic I (Lessons 1-37)
