Petty School Reading, Lesson 04. The Consonant C, D

This course provides step-by-step instruction and exercises to lead young children to read rightly, while also preparing them for future studies in the Classical Liberal Arts Academy. Students are expected to learn each lesson and to demonstrate mastery of the skills covered.

To complete the objectives of this lesson, complete the following tasks:

  1. Watch the Reading Lesson as many times as the child needs to learn the lesson.
  2. Study the lesson, committing each point to memory.
  3. When the content of the lesson is mastered, complete the lesson Assessment.


The following video lesson is intended to allow a young child to study independently. It is recommended that parents supervise their children in using these videos, until independence is achieved.

In this lesson, we will review the points we learned in lesson 01 and add two new points regarding the Latin vowels.

1.  REVIEW: What is an Idea?
An Idea is an image in our mind of anything we have seen, smelled, tasted, touched, or heard.

2.  REVIEW: What are words?
Words are symbols used to share ideas.

3.  REVIEW: What are Spoken Words?
Spoken words are symbols of ideas.

4.  REVIEW: What are Written Words?
Written words are symbols of spoken words.

5.  REVIEW: What are Words made of?
Words are made of Syllables.

6.  REVIEW: What are Syllables made of?
Syllables are made of Letters.

7.  What are Vowels?
Vowels are sounds made with the voice.

8.  How many vowels are there in Latin?
In Latin, there are five vowels: A, E, I, O, U.

9. What are Consonants?
Consonants are sounds that must be spoken with a vowel.
