Are SAT Tests Required for College Admission?

When I was a private school teacher, I was always the schools’ SAT Prep teacher.  In fact, I was trained by the Princeton Review to prepare students for the SAT, was trained by Pearson Testing to grade SAT Essays and led a number of former students to perfect SAT scores.

However, in God’s providence, my eldest four children applied to college with no SAT required for admission.  None of them even took the SAT.

The reason for this was that the COVID lockdowns caused so much chaos in education that college admission policies had to allow for the disruption.  One way the colleges did this was by suspending SAT requirements for students who were affected by the lockdowns.   This is a temporary accommodation that should be ending in the near future.

To gain some clarity for students (and myself), I wrote to a number of admission reps to ask for official info on whether SAT tests will be required for college admissions in the near future.  I’ll share the responses as the admission reps get back to me:

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Harvard College extended our standardized testing policy through the Class of 2030 application cycle. We will allow students to apply for admission without requiring ACT or SAT test results.”

Harvard University

“Princeton University has extended our test optional policy for first-year and transfer applicants for the next three admission cycles (that is, for applications due in the falls of 2023, 2024, and 2025). Students who opt to apply to Princeton without an ACT or SAT score will not be at a disadvantage in our process.”

Princeton University

“SAT/ACT scores are optional through fall 2025. Beyond that, we do not yet know.”

Virginia Tech University

“Penn State will be test-optional for summer/fall through 2025.First-year Penn State applicants for Spring, Summer, or Fall 2024 and 2025 are able to choose whether to submit SAT or ACT scores as part of their applications.”

Penn State University

“We’ve extended our current test-optional practice for two years. If applying for admission for Fall 2024 or Fall 2025, you’ll have the choice of sharing or not sharing results from the SAT and ACT.”

University of Virginia

“NC State will be test-optional for 2024 spring and fall first-year applicants. A determination as to whether or not NC State will remain test-optional beyond the 2024 application cycle has not yet been made by the UNC System. We recommend that prospective students take a standardized test as part of their college application preparation.”

North Carolina State University

“ACT/SAT scores will not be required for the next admissions cycle. We will review for further cycles at a later date.”

Duke University

“We are test-optional for the fall 2024 application cycle. This is still to be determined for future cycles for fall 2025 and beyond.”

University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill)

The University of Notre Dame will be test optional for the 2024 and 2025 application cycles (i.e., for soon-to-be current juniors and seniors). Beyond this, we have not made a decision on whether we will continue our test optional policy.

University of Notre Dame

“Our admission process for applicants for the 2024-25 academic year will be test-optional, with the requirement of a one page essay about the mission of Franciscan University in lieu of the test score if they choose not to submit one. Our academic affairs committee determines this policy on a year by year basis, so I cannot guarantee that it will continue for the following year.”

Franciscan University of Steubenville

“The Catholic University of America is test free/blind for both admission and scholarship consideration and as such do not require or use the SAT or ACT exams. SAT and ACT scores that we receive are suppressed from the admission and scholarship process and we only ask for them post enrollment for placement and research purposes.”

Catholic University of America

So, based on the responses, it looks like SAT tests will NOT be required for students applying for admission in Fall 2024 or Fall 2025 but may become required again in the future.

I hope you find this helpful.
