God has revealed to us that He created the world. The Bible says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” There’s no question about that. The question, “When did God create the world?” is more difficult to answer.
Throughout history, wise Christian men have taught that the world was created around 4,000 BC. They came to this number using the Bible because we find many records of men’s lives, how long they lived, and so on. For example, in Genesis 5 we read this:
“Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begot a son to his own image and likeness, and called his name Seth. And the days of Adam, after he begot Seth, were eight hundred years: and he begot sons and daughters. And all the time that Adam lived came to nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.
Seth also lived a hundred and five years, and begot Enos. And Seth lived after he begot Enos, eight hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters. And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.”
So, God tells us that Seth was born 130 years after Adam was created. He also tells us that Enos was born 105 years after Seth was born. That means that Enos was born 235 years after the creation of the world. These records continue through the Bible even to the time of Jesus Christ. We read in the Gospel of Matthew:
“All the generations, from Abraham to David, are fourteen generations. And from David to the transmigration of Babylon, are fourteen generations: and from the transmigration of Babylon to Christ are fourteen generations.”
Thus, we can use the Bible history to estimate when the world was created by dating back from the birth of Jesus Christ. This is why we use “B.C.” to measure the dates of world history.
Today, you will hear many say that the world is billions of years old. This obviously does not come from the Bible, which is God’s word. These numbers are based on a theory called “evolution”, which teaches that God didn’t actually create the world all at once, as He told us in the Bible, but that the world was formed little by little, over millions and millions of years. If one chooses to believe in the theory of evolution, then he must believe that the world is billions of years old because he does not believe that God said, “Let there be” and it was so.
In this course, we will not assume that the theory of evolution is true, but will follow a simple reading of the Bible. When we do so, we learn that the world was created, by God, a little more than 6,000 years ago, in 4,000 B.C.
