“What I Have Learned This Year” (June 2024)

The 2023-2024 school year has been one of the most productive ever in the Classical Liberal Arts Academy. The amount of work completed by students has been amazing. I am grading hundreds of assignments weekly, across all subjects, and the work is generally very good. As more students learn how to study, they are able to take on more studies and move deeper into classical Catholic studies.

This week, I posted on the Study Center, asking students to (voluntarily) write a brief summary of what they’ve learned this year.

I will share their responses as they come in:

“I started on a couple of courses this year, Logic and Summa Theologica I, which I have both enjoyed. Logic has been especially interesting and has actually helped a little in understanding how St. Thomas composes his arguments in Summa Theologica. I also started in Classical Geometry I, which was a little confusing at first but I understand it better now. I’ve been continuing with my Latin courses in Latin Reading II and Latin Grammar I, and even though they’re getting to a more difficult level, I still enjoy them. I’ve also been working on Classical Ethics and World History. I’m still getting through Book V of Ethics and Aristotle’s explanation of justice, and it’s been fun to study World History now that I’ve gotten to the Medieval part. Overall, I feel like it has been an enjoyable school year for me.”

I learned that I do like studying languages on the CLAA, especially in the Reading courses. I learned that I can (if I work hard at it) write assessments for challenging studies, and that it is rewarding to do so. Before coming into the CLAA, I was always so daunted by writing assignments. Most importantly for me, I learned that studying my Faith is actually a very exciting, enjoyable, and rewarding experience.

Nothing very specific there, but this year I think studying in the CLAA has taught me very important concepts on courage, faith, and perseverance. I look forward to continuing my studies today and in the future!

This year I learned how to read, how to write my name and words. I started with Latin lessons and I made my First Communion!! But my favorite thing was reading!!
