Offline Study Resources Developing

Parents often complain to me that they don’t want their children online, don’t like technology, prefer printed study materials, etc, as if I invented the internet. They seem to ignore the reality that I’m the classicist in the room, who devoted his entire life to ancient studies! I prefer printed books and offline studies as well, but real classical Catholic studies are not currently possible in print…yet.

Study Materials

The problem is that the materials that Catholics need to study have fallen out of print over the last century and there’s a great deal of work needed to research and find the needed study materials, and even more work needed to restore them to print.

The great error of the Catholic homeschooling community is that the publishers choose to make easy money rather than do the real work that needed to be fine. Parents, also, are delusional, imagining that they can simply throw money at homeschool supplies, buying whatever happens to be available, and give their children a real Catholic education. This is simply not realistic. The stuff being printed and sold in the Catholic homeschooling market is garbage, but this won’t be understood until the real study materials are restored.

We developed our online program to serve as a realistic means to pursue this work in the present, while we work to restore a more perfect plan in the future. We have access to amazing study tools today, but I have no idea if they will be available next year. All of this technology we are using today depends on fragile systems that can be interrupted by natural or man-made troubles at any time. I believe we should be using these tools to develop a long term solution, rather than putting all of our eggs into this one digital basket.

This year, I will be making all of the necessary study texts available in printed form. We are going to begin making printed study materials available for on-demand printing. While students are using these texts, most of which will simply be reprints of old books, we will be preparing new revised editions of these works for the future. We will make study materials available in a number of formats: digital, printable and printed.

This work is already underway, as you can see here:

Assessment

As the study materials are being restored, the next problem relates to the actual study of those materials. All of the arguments that can be made for offline study materials can be made for offline assessments as well. We will be making more opportunities for students to complete assessments offline and submit handwritten or typed work for review and grading. Students can complete all of their work offline and submit it in efficient ways.

There resources and opportunities are coming– one step at a time.

God bless,
