Logical Fallacies

Aristotle’s final work in the Organon, called “Sophistical Elenchi,” is one of the most practical books ever written. It’s not about how to construct clever arguments or win debates through trickery. It’s about something far more important: how to recognize when reasoning fails, and more crucially, how to avoid failing in your own thinking.

Let me tell you why this matters. Reasoning is supposed to correspond to reality. When we argue, we’re trying to say something true about the world. We’re trying to move from what we know to what we don’t know. We’re trying to arrive at knowledge. But fallacies short-circuit this entire process. They make arguments appear to work when they actually don’t. They confuse us. They lead us astray. And if we don’t know how to recognize them, we’ll believe false things, make poor decisions, and be manipulated by those who use these fallacies deliberately.

The Scholastic philosophers, particularly St. Thomas Aquinas, understood this deeply. They recognized that fallacies aren’t merely intellectual mistakes. They’re obstacles to truth. They’re traps that can fool even intelligent people if they’re not careful. In a world where we’re constantly bombarded with arguments—in politics, in advertising, in social media, in casual conversation—understanding these traps isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.

But here’s what’s even more important: there’s a matter of your own integrity as a thinker. If you want to pursue truth, if you want to reason well, if you want to be a person of intellectual honesty, you need to understand these fallacies. You need to recognize them in your own thinking. You need to be willing to correct yourself when you fall into these errors. The Scholastics called this intellectual virtue—the habit of thinking well, of being careful with your reasoning, of respecting truth above all else.

Aristotle organized fallacies into two categories. Some depend on language itself. Others exist independent of language. This distinction is important because it tells us something fundamental about reasoning. Some errors arise simply from the ambiguity of words. Others arise from logical mistakes that would persist even if we used perfectly clear language. Understanding both types will help you think more clearly about everything.

I. Fallacies Dependent on Language

These arise from linguistic ambiguities or misuses of words. They’re particularly dangerous because they can seem convincing at first glance. The words sound right. The argument appears to follow logically. But the confusion lies in the language itself. The Scholastics emphasized that careful definition and precise use of terms are essential to avoid these errors. If we’re not clear about what our words mean, we can’t reason clearly about anything.

1. Equivocation

Equivocation is using a word with multiple meanings in different senses within the same argument. Consider this example: “All banks are financial institutions. The riverbank is a bank. Therefore, the riverbank is a financial institution.” The argument is formally valid—it follows the rules of logic perfectly. But it’s unsound because the word “bank” means two different things. The first time it means a financial institution. The second time it means the side of a river. This is equivocation, and it’s deceptive precisely because it hides behind the appearance of logical validity.

Equivocation is one of the most common fallacies in everyday reasoning. Someone will use a word in one sense, then shift to another sense without acknowledging the shift. The argument seems to work because we’re not paying attention to the change. The Scholastics understood that equivocation violates the law of non-contradiction. A thing cannot be and not be in the same respect at the same time. But when we equivocate, we’re treating one word as if it refers to the same thing throughout the argument, when it actually refers to different things. We’re violating the fundamental principle of clear thinking.

2. Amphiboly

Amphiboly is ambiguity in sentence structure rather than a single word. The syntax allows multiple interpretations. Consider: “He saw the man with binoculars.” Did he use binoculars to see the man, or did the man have binoculars? The sentence structure doesn’t tell us. Or think about this one: “The teacher told the student that he was wrong.” Who was wrong—the teacher or the student? The sentence structure is ambiguous.

Amphiboly is trickier than equivocation because it’s not about word meanings—it’s about how words are arranged. In formal reasoning, this kind of ambiguity can derail an entire argument. A conclusion drawn from an ambiguous premise might be valid if we interpret the premise one way, but invalid if we interpret it another way. We can’t know which until we clarify the language. This is why the study of grammar is so important in the classical liberal arts. Grammar is not merely about correcting speech. It’s about understanding how language works, how meaning is conveyed through structure, and how to use language precisely. Without this skill, we’re vulnerable to amphiboly.

3. Composition

Composition is assuming that what’s true of the parts applies to the whole. Each ingredient in a cake might be light, but that doesn’t mean the cake is light when you combine them all together. Each brick in a wall is small, but a wall made of many bricks can be very large. Each member of a team might be weak, but the team as a whole might be strong if they work together well. Or conversely, each member might be strong, but the team might be weak if they don’t cooperate. The properties of parts don’t automatically transfer to the whole.

This is why composition is a fallacy—it ignores the way wholes are constituted from parts. The Scholastics understood this through the concept of substance and accidents. A property that belongs to a part might be accidental to the whole. The whole has its own nature, its own principles of operation. We can’t simply assume that what’s true of the parts is true of the whole.

4. Division

Division is the reverse of composition. It’s assuming that what’s true of the whole applies to each part. If composition wrongly moves from parts to whole, division wrongly moves from whole to parts. A successful company might have some employees who are not particularly skilled. A beautiful painting might contain some brushstrokes that, in isolation, are unremarkable. A well-written book might contain some sentences that, taken alone, are mediocre. The properties of the whole don’t necessarily belong to each part.

Again, the Scholastics would point out that this fallacy violates proper understanding of how wholes and parts relate. The whole is not simply the sum of its parts. It has its own unity, its own form. And the properties of the whole don’t automatically distribute to each part. This is an important distinction for clear thinking.

5. Accent

Accent is misleading due to emphasis or pronunciation altering meaning. The same sentence, spoken with different stress patterns, can mean different things. “I didn’t say he stole the money” (I said something else about him). “I didn’t say he stole the money” (someone else said it). “I didn’t say he stole the money” (he stole something else). The words are identical, but the meaning changes with the accent. In written form, we might use italics or punctuation to indicate accent. In spoken form, we use tone and stress.

This fallacy is particularly insidious because it operates at the level of delivery rather than content. Someone might technically say something true, but by emphasizing the wrong part, they create a false impression. This is why careful listening and reading are essential skills. You need to pay attention not just to what people say, but to how they say it.

6. Form of Expression

Form of Expression is confusing categories due to similar linguistic forms. Words that have similar grammatical forms might refer to very different categories of things. “Running” is an action. “A runner” is a person. They’re grammatically related, but logically distinct. Just because something can be expressed in similar grammatical forms doesn’t mean those forms refer to the same kind of thing. This fallacy is particularly common in abstract reasoning, where we might confuse the form of our language with the actual nature of what we’re discussing.

The Scholastics would emphasize that this fallacy violates the principle of analogy. Words can be related in different ways. They can be univocal (meaning exactly the same thing), equivocal (meaning completely different things), or analogical (meaning related but distinct things). If we confuse these relationships, we’ll reason badly.

II. Fallacies Independent of Language

These stem from logical errors beyond words. Even if we used perfectly clear language, these fallacies would still occur. They’re errors in reasoning itself, not in the language we use to express that reasoning. These are perhaps even more important to understand, because they reveal the structure of good reasoning itself.

1. Accident

Accident is applying a general rule to a specific case where an accidental property invalidates it. “Men have beards, so this baby boy will have a beard.” But age is an accidental property of a man. A baby boy is a man, but he doesn’t have a beard because of his age. The general rule “men have beards” is not universally true because it doesn’t account for accidental variations.

This fallacy occurs when we apply a general principle without considering whether accidental circumstances might make the principle inapplicable in a particular case. The Scholastics understood this through the distinction between substance and accidents. Substance is what a thing is essentially. Accidents are properties that a thing has but that don’t define what it is. A man is essentially rational. Having a beard is accidental. If we confuse these, we’ll reason badly.

2. Secundum Quid

Secundum Quid, which means “in a certain respect,” is overgeneralizing from a qualified statement or vice versa. Someone might be honest with friends but dishonest in business. Someone might be brave in physical danger but cowardly in social situations. The fallacy occurs when we drop the qualification and treat a limited truth as a universal truth. “He’s honest with friends, so he’s always honest.” That’s not how it works.

Conversely, we might add qualifications where they don’t belong, treating a universal truth as if it only applies in certain cases. Either way, we’re mishandling the scope of our claims. This is a crucial fallacy to understand because so much of our reasoning involves qualifications. We need to be precise about the scope of our claims. We need to know when a statement is universally true and when it’s only true under certain conditions. The Scholastics emphasized this through their careful use of distinctions. They would say things like “I distinguish: in one sense yes, in another sense no.” This is not evasion. It’s precision.

2. Ignoratio Elenchi

Ignoratio Elenchi, which means “ignorance of refutation,” is proving a point irrelevant to the issue at hand. You might prove your point brilliantly, but if it’s not the point that was actually in question, you’ve committed this fallacy. In a debate about whether a policy will reduce poverty, arguing that the policy is popular is irrelevant. You might successfully prove that the policy is popular, but that doesn’t address whether it will reduce poverty. This fallacy is common in political discourse, where people often argue for conclusions that sound related to the issue but don’t actually address it.

The Scholastics would say that this fallacy violates the principle of relevance. In dialectic—in the pursuit of truth through discussion—we need to stay focused on the actual question at hand. We need to prove what needs to be proved, not something else that merely sounds related.

3. Begging the Question

Begging the Question, or Petitio Principii in Latin, is assuming the conclusion in the premise. “God exists because the Bible says so, and the Bible is true because God wrote it.” This is circular reasoning. The argument appears to prove something, but it’s actually just restating what it already assumed. The problem is that it doesn’t actually establish anything. If someone doesn’t already believe the conclusion, they have no reason to accept the premises. And if they do already believe the conclusion, the argument is unnecessary.

Begging the question is particularly insidious because it can be hard to spot. The premises might seem independent of the conclusion, but on closer inspection, they actually presuppose it. The Scholastics understood that begging the question violates the very purpose of reasoning. Reasoning is supposed to move from what we know to what we don’t know. It’s supposed to establish something new. But begging the question doesn’t do this. It just goes in circles. This is why it’s such a fundamental error.

4. False Cause

False Cause, or Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc in Latin, is inferring causation from mere sequence or correlation. “The rooster crows, then the sun rises, so the rooster causes the sunrise.” Just because one thing happens before another doesn’t mean the first caused the second. This fallacy is common in reasoning about historical events, medical treatments, and social policies. Someone recovers from an illness after taking a supplement, so they conclude the supplement caused the recovery. But they might have recovered anyway. A policy is implemented, and the economy improves, so people conclude the policy caused the improvement. But the economy might have improved for other reasons.

Correlation is not causation, and sequence is not causation. Establishing true causation requires more careful reasoning. The Scholastics understood causation through Aristotle’s four causes: material, formal, efficient, and final. True causation involves understanding how one thing actually produces an effect in another. This is much more complex than mere sequence. It requires understanding the nature of things and how they interact.

Why the Knowledge of Fallacies is Important

These fallacies are not merely academic curiosities. They’re tools for understanding how human reasoning fails. And understanding how reasoning fails is essential for anyone who wants to think clearly, argue well, and avoid being deceived.

In modern society, we’re surrounded by fallacious reasoning. We see it in the media. We see it in political discourse. We see it in advertising. We see it in social media. And if you don’t know how to recognize these fallacies, you’ll be vulnerable to them. You’ll believe false things. You’ll make poor decisions. You’ll be manipulated by those who use these fallacies deliberately.

But here’s what’s even more important: there’s the matter of your own integrity as a thinker. If you want to pursue truth, if you want to reason well, if you want to be a person of intellectual honesty, you need to understand these fallacies. You need to recognize them in your own thinking. You need to be willing to correct yourself when you fall into these errors.

This is what the Scholastics called intellectual virtue. It’s the habit of thinking well. It’s the discipline of respecting truth above all else. It’s the willingness to follow an argument wherever it leads, even if it contradicts what you thought you believed. It’s the humility to admit when you’re wrong and the courage to change your mind.

This is why Aristotle wrote about fallacies. This is why the study of logic has always been central to classical education. Logic is not about winning arguments. It’s about pursuing truth. And the pursuit of truth requires that we understand how reasoning can go wrong.

So study these fallacies carefully. Learn to recognize them in arguments you encounter. Practice identifying them. Ask yourself:

  • Am I equivocating?
  • Am I being ambiguous?
  • Am I confusing parts and wholes?
  • Am I assuming what I’m trying to prove?
  • Am I mistaking correlation for causation?
  • and so on…

Examine your own reasoning carefully. Be honest with yourself about where you might be falling into these traps. This is the beginning of wisdom and the foundation of intellectual virtue. This is necessary for any who wish to pursue a classical education.
