Hymns of the Liturgy of the Hours

The hymns of the Liturgy of the Hours are an essential part of the Church’s daily prayer, offering a poetic and musical expression of the faith that sanctifies each part of the day. They serve not only to open each hour with praise but also to set the spiritual tone for prayer, drawing the heart into the mysteries of the liturgical season, the time of day, or the life of a saint being commemorated. Rooted in Scripture, tradition, and centuries of devotional poetry, these hymns carry forward the voice of the Church in song, uniting the faithful across the world and throughout history.

In the Christian Prayer breviary—the one-volume edition used by many clergy and laypeople—over 170 hymns are provided for Morning, Evening, and Night Prayer, as well as for special seasons and feasts. Some hymns are drawn from ancient Latin texts, such as Te lucis ante terminum and Veni Creator Spiritus, while others come from the English devotional tradition or modern compositions. Whether sung or recited, these hymns enrich the liturgical rhythm of the hours and help shape a life of prayer rooted in praise, memory, and hope.

It is recommended that Catholics use their leisure time to learn the tunes and lyrics of the hymns of the Liturgy of the Hours.  Sheet music for all is available in the one volume “Christian Prayer” version of the Liturgy of the Hours.
