How to Calculate GPA

The Classical Liberal Arts Academy logo.As a homeschool parent, you may wish to calculate a high school student’s Grade Point Average (GPA).

1. Assign Grades

To do this you must, obviously, assign your children grades in their high school subjects.  Here’s an example:

Subject                 Credits   Grade
English                      1.0         A

Latin                          1.0         B
Algebra I                   1.0         B
Biology                      1.0         C
Ethics                         1.0         B
Theology                   1.0         A
Ancient History        1.0         B

Note: Your homeschool grades should never be more complicated than this.

2. Determine Grade Point Values

Each letter grade is equivalent to a certain number value, from 0 to 4.  This is what’s referred to as the “4.0 Scale”.

A = 4.0
B = 3.0
C = 2.0
D = 1.0
F = 0.0

3. Find Total Number of Credits and Grade Points Earned.

Subject                 Credits   Grade
English                      1.0         A (4.0)

Latin                          1.0         B (3.0)
Algebra I                   1.0         B (3.0)
Biology                      1.0         C (2.0)
Ethics                         1.0         B (3.0)
Theology                   1.0         A (4.0)
Ancient History        1.0         B (3.0)

The total number of Credits earned above is 7.0.
The total number of Grade Points earned is 22.0.

4. Find Grade Point Average (GPA)

Divide the total number of Grade Points (step 3) by the total number of credits the students has completed.  The answer is the student’s Grade Point Average, or GPA.

22 Grade Points ÷ 7.0 Credits = 3.14 GPA

That’s all there is to it.
