About the CLAA

Mr. & Mrs. Michael at Ft. Leonward Wood in 2020.

Thank you for visiting the Classical Liberal Arts Academy website.  I am sure you can see that our program is very different from anything else available today, and I would like to provide something of a personal introduction to help you understand who we are, and what we are seeking to do.

In the Classical Liberal Arts Academy, I am working, as a Catholic student, tutor, writer and father, to build a program of study that I believe is pleasing to God and good for men, being directed by Sacred Scripture as interpreted by the Roman Catholic Church through history, confirmed by the counsel of the doctors of the Church, and demonstrated by wise men from ancient times.  I am working “to research, restore, publish and teach the classical liberal arts curriculum studied and taught by the wise men and saints.”.  This curriculum serves the pursuit of natural wisdom in classical Philosophy and divine wisdom in Catholic Theology.  In all of these studies, there is only one Teacher, Jesus Christ, as we are all students.  To learn about this program of study, I invite you to read the contents of a book I wrote, titled “Understanding Classical Catholic Education”.

As I pursue this work, I face many questions, which I do not pretend to have answers for.  Christian education has fallen so far from its former glory, that no easy solution is possible.  The decline has been in progress for hundreds of years, and the recovery will take generations.  We can simply offer our best efforts and try to restore the foundation for our children to build on.

As one seeking to offer what I can, I take no thought for my own human abilities or needs, but am trusting in the words of the Lord Jesus, which I have sought to follow since I was a teenager: “Be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on…Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6)  Likewise, I make no attempt to adapt or integrate this work into the current customs of modern society, but follow the Apostle’s command, “Be not conformed to this world; but be reformed in the newness of your mind, that you may prove what is the good, and the acceptable, and the perfect will of God.” (Romans 12)

I have undertaken his work with no human business plan or effort to “market” it to any human audience.  I give all of my attention to the mission state above and trust that, insofar as I am faithful to God and produce what is pleasing to Him, that He will lead His people to learn of it, understand and appreciate it, and make good and fruitful use of it, and provide for my needs in doing the work required.

If you are a student or parent, and have been led to consider the Classical Liberal Arts Academy as a source for your studies, I ask that you would pray for understanding and seek to think not as men think, but as God does, with truth, holiness and eternal happiness as your end.

In 2008, I chose to leave classroom teaching and establish the Classical Liberal Arts Academy, to “research, restore, publish and teach the classical liberal arts“, which the primary goal being to offer my own children a true, classical Catholic education. As homeschooling parents, we knew that there were no serious curriculum options available to us and that a solution needed to be created.  We also realized that we were the ones with the background and experience needed to do the work, so, after receiving our bishop’s permission to begin teaching the classical Catholic curriculum locally, we got to work.  While we have worked to give our children the best we could with the time we’ve had, we continue this work today, and intend to continue it for the rest of our lives.

Who We Are

Mrs. and Mrs. Michael at Rutgers University in 2001.

My wife Dania and I met in high school, when we were 17 years old and have been married since 1998 (22 years).  We both attended Rutgers University in New Jersey, where we studied Classics and began teaching in Christian schools.  In 2000, my wife left classroom teaching to become a full-time home-maker and has been a homeschooling mother since.  I have taught Classics as a private school teacher, administrator and publisher for over 20 years.

We are a Roman Catholic family and attend Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Monroe, NC. We have served our parish as RCIA and faith formation teachers, and all of our children have served at the altar and continue to do so. My wife and I have recently applied to join the Third Order of St. Dominic, which we’ll be starting (formally) in October 2021.

Our family enjoys a quiet and tranquil life in rural North Carolina.  In God’s providence, it’s become clear that we’re raising a family of soldiers. Three of our children are adults and have chosen to serve our country in the US Army Reserves in three different fields:  Military Police, Combat Medic and Combat Engineer.  They have begun college studies in these fields, as well.  Seven children remain at home and are studying here in the Classical Liberal Arts Academy, and helping with support for other families.  It appears most of them will be interested in military careers as well.

May God help us to serve Him well in our generation.

Feedback

The Holy Spirit says, “Let another praise thee, and not thy own mouth: a stranger, and not thy own lips.” (Proverbs 27:2).  Seeing that there may be some appropriate place for human feedback, I offer these comments that have been received without solicitation who have studied with us.  If you’d like to add your own, please use our contact form.  If you’d like to read the daily complaints we receive, just visit the support forums. 😉

“As a Catholic Priest, I cannot but agree that vocations have died to a large extent because education is just not Catholic in ethos or method in our Catholic schools and is not helped by curriculum providers. Thank you for what you are doing for vocations and our children’s futures. May Almighty God bless you and your family and the CLAA.”

“From 2021-2023, I will study philosophy, mathematics, politics, economics, and classics at Oxford University.  When I discovered your program, I knew that I had to consider enrolment myself, for my own moral and spiritual edification.”

“What you have assembled rivals (or in fact exceeds) the standards of the finest universities of modern Europe.”

“Your program is fascinating, I had never seen a modern curriculum with the Trivium and Quadrivium.”

“When we began our homeschool journey, we knew we wanted to give our children a Classical and Catholic education. After trying a program that claimed to be Classical, we felt something was missing and not exactly what we were looking for. We searched for another classical program and found the CLAA. It was and is exactly what we wanted for our children. It is truly a classical and catholic program and our children have grown in so many ways through their studies. We have been using the program for 10 years and will continue using it for all of our children. We are so grateful for the continual guidance and help we have received from Mr. and Mrs. Michael.”

“Thank you and Dania and all your family for your hard work! You’ve changed our lives!!!  God bless you all!!

“This curriculum is second to none. It is truly and historically Christian, and particularly entirely Catholic. My children thoroughly enjoy and look forward to their studies every day, and are advancing at a surprising rate. The Michaels have been helpful and patient with all of our questions regarding the CLAA no matter how ridiculous they might be.”

“The boys get such a thrill out of messaging you and Mrs. Michael! We appreciate you guys so much!”

“This is true to the historical curriculum that all the saints studied. William and his wife have been most helpful and patient with us over the years. Be patient with your children when they begin but boy is this way of life worth it. No curriculum compares.”

“I’m so grateful to God now that I’m a Priest to have found you again with the free-men offer. It was so inspiring that I’ve now paid for many courses for my children and am recommending it to as many men and religious as I meet. I have some responsibility for vocations in my diocese and I completely agree that the vocations crisis is in the most part due to education and the lack thereof and evolution.”

“Your curriculum is obviously the most purely classical of all the many Catholic classical homeschool curricula out there, which makes it unique (truly the only thing of its kind on the market) Can’t wait to join the CLAA community in a few years!”

“Thank you for doing this. I really wish I had this kind of education growing up.  In Malaysia, we don’t have anything like this. Even Catholic schools are no longer Catholic.”

“Thank you for sharing our life of offering Christ to the poor and to one another. You are such a wonderful couple, amazing spirit and lovely blessed children. Give God thanks! We appreciate your whole-hearted and generous support for our community and the poor. May the Lord bless your family with peace and love. With love and prayers, M.O.P family.”  Missionaries of the Poor

“Mr. Michael’s courses are legendary. The magnitude of this man’s influence at our school reaches the level of a Hollywood drama. Like the inspirational characters from Dead Poets Society, The Emperor’s Club, and Coach Carter, Bill Michael has revolutionized the lives of numerous young people. In all of my years of teaching, I have never witnessed a teacher make such an extensive impact on students…He’s a man of outstanding moral integrity, he’s culturally relevant and in-tuned…and he seems to know something about everything. He may be the most brilliant man I have ever met.”  High School Theology Teacher

“My family is thoroughly enjoying CLAA. Watching my wife teach them and the CLAA forum has caused me to become a Catholic revert. THANK YOU!!!”

“Mr. Michael changes your life. He gives you spiritual guidance, forces you to use your mind and think, challenges you in every aspect of your life, and by the time he is finished with you, you’re able to think clearly and wisely. His ability to connect with you on any subject is phenomenal. Any subject, any time, any place, he is well prepared to teach and guide you. Most importantly he has made me a better person. I can’t say that about any teacher I’ve ever had in my life. He has dedicated his whole entire life to God’s work, and is the example of what Jesus wants us to be. I don’t think many people can say they know somebody like that. Mr. Michael has changed my life.”  Will Luoni, Attorney

“Mr. Michael’s teaching has provided me a firm base of learning in Logic and Rhetoric…I use his teachings everyday and the overall background that he provided me with has helped me defend Christianity.” Clint Irwin, Goalkeeper, Colorado Rapids (MLS)

“Mr. Michael is the kind of teacher that we should be very thankful to have…It is so refreshing to come across an educator who understands how different children learn and progress… His love for God’s children and his desire to reach all students is an incredible blessing to us all.”  Elementary School Teacher

“I cannot tell you enough or express in the right words how much we appreciate, and are now more at ease, this year. Understanding what you are offering and knowing I am now giving them just what they need, homeschooling does not feel so overwhelming. Thank you for taking the time to bring this treasure of the true classical curriculum back and thank you for helping us to implement and understand it. I think I am getting my sanity back.”
